Bullsheet - July 2001

Vol. 01 No. 07 - July 2001

President's Message

The summer is just flying, and it should be, because that is what we are all about, flying! It's July and before you know it we will be meeting indoors again and the summer will be over. At our last officer's meeting a lot of plans were made.

We have decided with what is left of the flying season, our club should have some outings that everyone can enjoy. For starters, we are inviting the Flying Eagles back for a Sunday get-together of flying, food and fun. Last year I personnally enjoyed both the Sunday we had then at our field and the day they had us at their field. BBQs took place at both fields, the flying was great and so were the people. Mark your calendar on July 29th for the Interclub Fun-Fly and BBQ.

And if for some reason you can't make this great event we have a SNHRCC Family Day planned for August 19th. Mark this one down - you won't want to miss this one, BBQ and flying all day with giveaways and special things happening all day!

If this is not enough for you to plan on, John Hayes has contacted Dave Muse. Dave is one of the people who put together the Construction Derby a few years ago. He was also a member of one of the teams. Let me tell you, it was a real blast! We only had a few hours to build a plane worthy of flying out of what looked like a bag of junk parts. You had to see this to believe it. Anyway, Dave has agreed to put some #^$^($# kits together.

Sign up at the next meeting to get on a team.

We are changing the name of the event from Construction Derby to Junkyard Wars! There will be four man teams. Be there on September 16th. Sign up early.

John Hayes put on a great glider contest. The parking lot was full of cars, the most I have seen uo there at one time! Everyone had a great day of flying competition with two awesome looking winches that John made himself! Rich Kelley, Darrell Wagner and myself cooked hotdogs and hamburgers, chips and cold drinks at lunch for everyone and watermelon for dessert. Everyone said they enjoyed it so much John is going to do it again September 23rd. Don't miss this one.

This is quite an agenda!

We will need help to pull all this off. Please volunteer any way you can. We will talk more on this at future meetings

We will talk more on these functions at the next club meeting.

Ray Breton has fertilized the field. Thank you Ray.

The mowing seems to be going all right. Thanks to Ken Ux for organizing all of this, and thanks to all the mowers for the work.

I would like to thank Rob Adamson for the donation of the fire extinguisher now hanging under the canopy.

Denise Lazzar deserves kudos for the great looking fire extinguisher sign she encased in plexiglas. Great job Denise!

Kip has been busy picking away at the waiting list. It has turned out to be a time consuming job. He has filled the membership to the allowable cap and has only seven people remaining on the waiting list. Contacting these people took many phone calls and several mailings. We are lucky to have Kip as our treasurer, he moves our CDs around as neccessary and keeps our checkbook balanced. He has been doing the job of two people. I think we should appoint a new position in our club - "Membership Officer". Thank you Kip for the great job you have been doing and hopefully we can get you some relief.

FUN-FLY on August 5th

For those of you who really like Fun-Flys, on August 5th, Ken Ux, Bill Ux and Jason Ux will be running two events. They have been described as one easy and the second more challenging. If you remember the Ux family's past events they are bound to be a blast.

Don't miss it! Come on down to Wagner Field and enjoy the fun.

Joining Aluminum

Years back I had the need to solder or weld (whatever you wish to call it) a broken part on a motor. I happened to see some aluminum solder called "Scratch & Solder". It had good possibilities for the job at hand.

I tried it with disastrous results.

I set the job aside and went on to other things. Some time later the need came up again to join aluminum. I tried again with the same disastrous results.

If all else fails read the instructions. The key to a good joint is to heat and scratch the solder and I can't emphasize SCRATCH enough!

The aluminum solder doesn't act anything like lead solder. At my first attempt I expected the aluminum solder to flow like lead solder, but it doesn't. You can heat the pieces you want to join along with the solder until the pieces start to melt and the solder will not flow. The solder will look like an oxidized mess.

The secret is to scratch the solder with some sort of pointed piece of metal. When you do the solder will start to flow. It will flow only where you scratch unless you use a lot of heat. You can use the solder itself to do the scratching but in a short time you will have too much solder applied.

What I use to perform the scratching is a machinists scribe. At times I have used a pointed piece of coathanger. The scribe will have to be heated to the temperature of the solder or it will adhere to the scribe.

Using these simple procedures should get you some nice strong good looking results. The following photos demonstrate the results possible.

The solder or welding rod is put out by Bernzomatic and is labeled:

Model AL-3 4043 They can be purchased at Home Depot in the tool department.

I hope this will inspire you to some creative uses. Let's see your creations at some meeting in the future.

JUNKYARD WARS!

How in the heck can you design, build and fly an R/C plane in under two hours?

Well . . . We are going to find out!

Your officers got together and decidied to have a "Construction Derby" similar to the one held back in 1997, but with a seemingly approproiate name change: "JUNKYARD WARS". We are certain it will be a blast.

The basic idea is that teams of 3-4 members come to the event with specific items. After a brief meeting a "kit" will be given to each team. The teams will have 2 hours to design and build a plane. Every minute over the 2-hour limit will recieve penalty points, while every minute under the 2-hour limit will receive bonus points. After all the planes are built, we will have a flying contest consisting of various manuvers. Each manuver will be worth a specific amount of points. You can choose to attempt or decline to do any manuver depending on whether you think your plane will survive it. The team with the most points wins . . . pretty simple huh?

You will notice that there aren't too many details here regarding what will be in the "kit" or what the flight manuvers will be, and that's on purpose.

Here's what I CAN tell you so far:

The event will be held September 16th starting at 8:30am. The kit contents are known only to Dave Muse who will be making up the kits, and I know he won't tell a soul.

Each team must provide the following items:

  • 1 - 2oz. bottle of CA adhesive & accelerator
  • 1 - razor saw
  • 1 - screwdriver
  • 1 - pair of pliers
  • 1 - pair of wire cutters
  • 1 - pencil or pen
  • 1 - work table (any size)
  • 1 - .20 - .32 engine with stock muffler (no tuned pipes) (mounted on a piece of 1/4" x 2-1/2" x 8" ply
  • 2 - props (any size)
  • 1 - fuel tank (assembled)
  • 1 - fuel ine (any length)
  • 2 - wheels
  • 1 - 4 channel radio, battery pack, receiver and no more than 4 servos
  • 1 - pencil or pen

That's it! You don't get to find out what is in the kit until you open it. You will be given the required flight manuvers at the morning meeting. (hint: The flight manuvers just may influence your design!). Oh, by the way, all color card members must fly this creation at least one lap around the field. White card members don't have to fly if they don't want to. After it's all done, prizes will be awarded to ALL participants and then we will have a BBQ get-together.

Entry Fee: NONE!! - we want everyone, regardless of experience to join in the fun, since that is what our club is for.

One last thing . . . We (the committee) will be judges, official time keepers and probably cooks. We'll talk about this some more at the coming meetings and we can begin selecting teams and go ahead with it.

I can't wait!!!!

-- John Hayes

TOUCH & GO - Revamped Website!

For those of you who have computers and web access you really should check out the newly revamped web site. If you haven't visited it in a while, it has undergone quite a transformation.

Kip Bean, our own treasurer, has revamped the website and updated the content. You can go there now for current weather information, news and hundreds of hobby links. If you compare it to other club sites on the web I think you will agree it's one of the best. Thank you, Kip.
