Bullsheet - February 2002

Vol. 02 No. 02 - February 2002

President's Message

We seem to be starting out the new year in a great way.

The Yankee Swap was a success as usual and a lot of fun for a lot of the members. The model airplane kit was a hit right away and everyone wanted it. It ended up in the hands of a young man who hoped to hang on to it and being the young enthusiast that he was no one really wanted to take it from him. However he lost it to a senior member and a subtle cheer went up, "Yea, one for the old guys." Some good humor, good attitudes and a good sport from our young guy. "Yea, for the young guy too."

Speaking of the younger set, who was that proud dad when his 15 year old son showed the Newport 17 scale model he had built? The beaming dad was Ted Zadlo who had every reason to be especially proud of his son, Doug Zadlo who did one heck of a great job. Look out, guys, Doug Zadlo is definitely someone to watch, he could make some of us old timers look like beginners.

Our money men tell us that the auction was a great success and one of our best money makers. Our modelers gathered up some of the goodies and items they were tired of seeing around and had no further use for. It was a great chance to make a few bucks so they could go out and buy bigger and better. Seems a few went out with more than they came in with. Our special thanks to them. To the credit of those in attendance, there were fewer moths flying out of those wallets than in the past. We really did have a good auction. Thanks to everyone who worked to make it a success.

A note of thanks also to all the great work done by our membership in the past year. Let’s not forget Andrzej Rutkowski who has managed our video library for years and plans to continue to do so in the coming year, special thanks from all of us.

Some of us managed to fly in December this year, but it appears as though our balmy weather is over and we need to work on those models so we’ll be ready for spring. Not to worry, all the field equipment has been stored in the shed at the field and if we’re lucky, we will have an early spring and we’ll be out there flying.

Noise Reduction Techniques

You won’t want to miss the February meeting. After the business meeting John Marien will be making a presentation on the causes of noise from our aircraft, the perception of noise, and methods for reducing that noise to acceptable levels.

In light of our recent issues at the field, this will be a timely subject. Even though we have solved our public relations problems by turning the field, we still are required to meet a 97db rule.

In conjunction with this talk John will also address some of the latest products coming from Northeast Aerodynamics.

7th Annual SNHRCC Auction a Success

The 7th Annual SNHRCC Auction opened to a record amount of models and equipment sitting on the tables that circled the perimeter of our large meeting room at the Litchfield Middle School. The room was full of modelers eager to start bidding on all the items waiting to be offered for bid by our experienced auctioneer Darrell Wagner. The beginning was a little frantic for me because I got there quite late with the freshly printed auction slips, but we guickly got off the ground and raced at a very rapid clip all the way past the normal 10 o'clock closing time to close out the auction very close to 10:30pm. At that time we had successfully closed out 161 seperate items for sale for a record $5,970.50 in gross sales. The following is a financial summary of the auction results.

Gross Sales:
$5,970.50
Credit Card Sales:
$1,194.80
Club's 10% on items
$640.35
Club's 5% on buybacks:
$14.35
Profit from Raffles Sales:
$63.00
Profit from Food Concession:
$39.82
Total Auction Income:
$755.52

Rick & Denise Lazzar did a great job putting together a nice food concession that was a nice step up from our normal coffee and donuts.

We had two items that were raffled off: A nice wooden toolchest that was won by Roland Harmon, and a LA .46 that came from R/C Buyers Warehouse

Things went so smoothly this year that the CAGs modelers wanted to use our well seasoned auction crew for their first annual auction on January 26th. That auction was a good success also.

Meeting Minutes - December Meeting

December SNHRCC Meeting Minutes
December 11th , 2001
Litchfield Middle School, Litchfield, NH

Officers in attendance: Darrell Wagner, Maurice Therriault, Kip Bean and John Hayes.

Secretary and Treasurer’s reports were read and accepted.

Old Business:

Kip Bean reported nine people were on a wait list and in the process of joining.

Kip sent e-mail applications to members, some members are unable to open the .PDF files.

Rich McGuinness asked about hats, stating the 495th has really nice hats! Darrell asked about shirts and jackets, from the hands raised it was clear that more people wanted shirts than jackets.

A club member asked about an instructor list have one was available since it wasn't on the Bullsheet anymore. Kip said he would e-mail the list.

Bob Johnson mentioned the History Channel program on December 12th about the life of a World War I pilot; Rhinebeck will be featured on this program.

Dick Easton requested a periodic printing of the club's membership names and numbers. This would be a way of knowing who is currently in the club and how to contact them.

Maurice proposed the idea of a Weightlift 2002 contest. Team members could be anywhere from 1 to 20 per team; it would be open to all area clubs from all of the New England States. Entry fee, would be $50 per team. Any size plane could be used but limited to a .46 size engine. Planes must meet AMA noise guidelines. Flight to be unassisted takeoff, fly one-minute, land, only damage allowed to airplane will be a broken prop. Each aircraft is to be equipped with a removable box capable holding up to 25 lbs. Pilot must be AMA member all others on the team need not be AMA members. Huge prizes will be awarded the winners. John Marion, Rich Kelley, Morris Terriault and Rick Lazzar will be the contest committee. More details will follow.

Doug Zadlo brought a World War I Neuport biplane to show the membership, this plane is very nicely finished in scale color and detail.

Following the meeting everyone enjoyed coffee and doughnuts and then a fine Yankee gift swap.

Flexible Muffler Pipe

Looks like the club members may have to do some muffler design to meet the noise levels so here is something I found the other day that may be of help.

In my latest project I needed to radically change the direction of the exhaust outlets on my D&B twin. After a number of failed attempts I started to wander the aisles at Home Depot and finally spotted what I needed.

This stuff is stainless steel tubing that is used to connect gas ranges to the wall plumbing. The tubing is quite rugged but light in weight and looks like the hose that comes off of a pilot’s oxygen mask. It is easily formed and cut. But the best thing is it doesn’t cost much.

I bought a 3/4” x 36” assembly for about 8 bucks. I brought it home, cut off all the connectors on the ends (probably five bucks of chromed brass fittings), and felt I still had a bargain. 3/4” seemed like the largest size but there are smaller sizes around too.
Being stainless there will be no rust problem and it can be brazed or silver soldered.

Check it out.

Point of Reference

FYI the English have faced noise problems for some time and have produced some of the quietest flyers. I saw a Mosquito at Top Gun a few years back that could easily have been an electric judging by the sound, but actually had two large four strokes. Here are the results from one club in the UK. Secret- reduce RPM. These measurements are at 9 meters.

Protect The Field Reminder:

Don’t know if this needs to be said, but since I almost screwed up, guess I will.

On these balmy days like we had at the end of January, the field is a nice place to work out the bugs on the new project. But remember there is not much frost in the ground and the hill is like a large sponge – stay on the road and gravel parking lot. It’s mud season.

New District Internet List:

A new internet list has appeared run by some folks in District I AMA. I don’t believe it is AMA sanctioned, just folks in the district, but looks like it could be interesting.
