Bullsheet - July 2002

Vol. 02 No. 07 - July 2002

President's Message

We had one of our best turnouts ever for the glider contest. The word around was that a good time was had by all. John Hayes did a great job organizing the event and for that we all thank him. Now we need someone to step forward to organize a good old fashioned fun fly which has always been a favorite among the membership. For all of you who requested that we do a fun fly, get together, guys and start planning. You know you will get all the help you need from the rest of us.

By the way, we need an editor for the Bullsheet.

A reminder to all of you that the weight lifting contest is coming up on the 28th of this month and we need more of you to sign up for the event. The committee for the BIG event needs to meet to finalize plans for the day. We’re here to help. Food and drink will be available for the event, however, since only 2 teams have signed up, we may have to charge up to $20.00 per hot dog for the club to break even. Remember guys, we have one of the largest clubs in the area, we need to show an esprit de corps for our events and by the way, we need an editor for the Bullsheet!

About that new runway, we had some great volunteers who put in the post holes and they deserve a special thanks for their hard work. the next step is to pour the concrete for the posts then we can get the fence up and then happy days are here again. We will post the grand opening date at the field, on the web and oh yes, by the way, we need an editor for the Bullsheet, so we can post these special notices!

By the way, did I mention that we need an editor for the Bullsheet? Maybe we should make this an elected post and we can pick the volunteers, put them on the same pay scale as the rest of your elected members, who as you know, are getting rich from their positions!? We can’t guarantee the editor would get the going rate as the editor of USA Today, but think of all the perks you get. I’ll make up a list of the perks and advantages for your next message. Seriously, we all miss the Bullsheet and with all the talent in our club, we should have several people volunteering. What do you say, guys?

Summer Soar Wrap-Up!

I would like to thank all who attended the Summer Soar Glider Contest. We had
a great event with a super turnout!

There were 14 flyers with a total of 21 aircraft being flown in the 3 classes, the field was covered with all sorts of gliders and electrics. We had Maurice Theriault and Dick Hayes helping at the scoreboard / impound, and Rick Lazzar at the grill. All the flyers were helping time each other, and 5 rounds were flown. The thermals were spotty and at times a challenge to find to reach the 7 minute duration round.

Mid-day there was a Electric Limbo event where the object was for all electrics to launch together, to climb up, and fly, at a designated time come down within a 1 minute window, below a specified altitude, then climb back up till the next time period and repeat. The object was too see who could stay aloft longest. This was a test of strategy and battery duration.

The Summer Soar winners are:

Open Class

1st Mark Drela Bubble Dancer (original)
2nd Lincoln Ross Olympic
3rd John Hayes Majestic

Two Meter

1st Lincoln Ross Unknown Sailplane
2nd Pete Young Sovereign
3rd Darrell Wagner Sovereign

7 Cell Electric

1st Mark Drela Allegro Electric (original)
2nd Darrell Wagner Back To Basics
3rd Mark Duckworth Sovereign

Once again, thanks everyone for making this a great contest, look forward to another one in the fall.
