Vol. 04 No. 08 — August 2004

President's Message

Hi All,

Hope everyone is having a fun summer. I haven’t seen many members out flying this summer. Is there something more exciting somewhere else that I should know about? If so, please call me and fill me in.

For the August meeting we will have a special presentation. Pete Reed will be there to talk about and demonstrate the Quickee 500. Please show support for the club and make Pete feel welcome by attending the meeting. Pete’s demonstration will take place before the business part of the meeting so don’t be late. Also, the gates will be left open on meeting nights so please don’t lock the gates when you come in. Both gates will be secured at the end of the meeting by the last person out.

The 2004 Weight Lift Challenge was very disappointing this year. At 10am only the returning champion team had signed up and by 11am the Contest Director, Kip Bean, had called the event off due to lack of participation. Two other contestants arrived at noon and wanted to enter so our CD has re-scheduled the contest for sometime in late August. More details will be available at the August meeting and on the club web-site.

All of the members who did show up had a great time and good food. Our lunch was prepared by Chef Dave Redman. A big thank you to Dave, Kip, and to all of the other members who helped out with this event.

Our next club event coming up is the Construction Derby on August 15th with Shawn McCarthy as the contest director. Details on the event are in the July Bullsheet. This event promises to be a lot of fun and I hope to see many of you there.

On a personal note, thank you to all for the kind words, thoughts, and of course many prayers. I’m doing quite well.

2004 Construction Derby - August 15th, 2004
I hope you’re getting ready, because the Construction Derby is coming! It’s time to start forming your teams. Each team can have up to three members, but I suppose you could try with two. Not all of the team members have to fly the plane, but it could be worth some points if they do fly (yeah, that’s a hint). I don’t want to give too much away just yet, but I can tell you that building time bonuses will be awarded (and overtime penalties too!), and flight maneuvers will be judged and given points. I imagine the other teams will help score the maneuvers, and give “encouragement” as they see fit. Of course, the “Kit” contents are confidential. Teams will pay a nominal fee for the “Kit” and a BBQ lunch will be provided.

Sound good? Then plan on being there on August 15th. I’ll give more information when the date gets closer. Take a look at the schedule and see what you need to bring…

WeightLift Challenge 2004 Post-Mortem
July 25th came... and July 25th went, with the reigning champs "Team Buzzard" unchallenged. No other teams showed up on time or for that matter a full hour after the event was supposed to have started. So, at 11am after consulting with the contestants and the club officers in attendance I cancelled the 2004 WeightLift Challenge due to a lack of participants.

At around 11am a hastily assembled team and plane came in the gate from the Merrimack club. I mean hastily because this team had put together their plane in just 72 hours prior to the contest, but the wheels had already been put in motion and all that was left was to have a good time flight testing and a little good BBQ. Fun-fly planes were fired up and several people had a good time flying in one of the best weather days of the summer.

The grill was fired up also and with the competant help of Dave Redman a sufficient quantity of hamburgers, hot dogs, etc. was cooked and consumed by anyone with an appetite.

At around noon time another late entry showed up only to find the non-event. But as his plane was pulled out of the van it was evident that all those pieces added up to a very impressive effort to mount a credible challenge to team Buzzard. You could tell from looking that a lot of burning of the midnight oil had been done to get this bird almost ready to compete for all the marbles.

John Hayes brought his trusty digital camera so a photographic record was made of all the goings on. Click on the "PHOTOS" button at the top and then check out the top link on that page for a nice directory.
