Vol. 05 No. 05 - May 2005

President's Message

Point to Ponder

It’s best to keep the pointed end going forward as much as possible.

Things are shaping up at the field thanks to the following members for jobs well done.

  • Fertilize field - Ray Breton
  • New propane tank – Dick Parr
  • Gate and road repairs – Harry Peters & Rich Kelley

A bulletin board has been added at the field. It has upcoming events, dump days, meeting dates and locations posted.

John Hayes should have the results from Show & Tell night for the May meeting.

Don’t forget the Construction Derby is coming up on May 22, 2005.

The Wednesday Night Jam Session got off to a cool start last week with only 3 pilots flying. Ray Breton, Harry Peters and John Hayes. The weather has to get better sometime.

Construction Derby - May 22, 2005

What is it they say about “Good things come to those who wait”? We were originally scheduled to have our Construction Derby on 8/15/04. Well, after many delays (who could forget – we even had a hurricane!) the Construction Derby is back on. It will be held at Wagner Field on May 22, which is a Sunday morning.

Do you remember the TV series MacGiver? The show where our hero was able to get out of any jam with something like a paper clip and a ball-point pen? Well, you will get a kit of parts from which you will have to design, build and fly your airplane. Points are based on both building time and flying ability (of the plane). Innovation is key here – At our last Derby my team took the hasp and lock off the shed and taped it to the plane to balance it!

What’s the cost? It’s FREE! I have 5 kits so there will be a maximum of 5 teams. You can have as many team members as you want, but you will all have to split the prize. We have gift certificate prizes for 1st through 5th, so everyone gets something.

Here’s a look at the details (originally published in our August 2004 Bullsheet):

Southern New Hampshire R/C Club 2005 Construction Derby
Schedule of Events
Sunday, May 22, 2005

  • 8:30 – 9:00am Teams arrive – Set up work tables with tools and supplies
  • 9:20am Pilot/Builder’s meeting
  • 9:30 Kits handed out – Let the construction begin!
  • 10:00am Field opens for general flying
  • 12 Noon Penalty points begin to accumulate –Lunch time! (Unless you are still building – maybe we’ll save you a hamburger!)
  • 1:00pm Flying your “creation” begins

Awards/Prizes to be given out when the flying finishes.

Note: The field will be open for general flying all day except from 1:00pm till the derby is done – You’ll need empty sky to fly your “plane”

Teams must supply the following items:

  1. One engine, premounted – no restrictions, tuned pipes OK…whatever you think your plane can handle! (For those new to this – Plan on something around a .25 to a .45 – Bigger than this is not necessarily an advantage )
  2. Propellers for your chosen engine – any size and quantity
  3. Preassembled fuel tank
  4. Fuel Tubing
  5. Transmitter, battery pack, receiver, 7 servos maximum. Switch harness if you want. Hardware to mount your servos
  6. 4 wheels maximum – you pick the size
  7. Adhesives: Epoxy, hot stuff, whatever you think you might need to build a plane
  8. Flight box to fuel and start your plane

Work area and tools allowed:

  • No restrictions! What can you get to the field?
